West Magazine explores the Lavish Exteriors, Meticulous Design and all the Fine Dynamic materials that went into building this Gorgeous home’s exterior.
The client of this Oakville home was looking for a modern architectural landscape design to match the style of the house, which was custombuilt by PCMnow Inc. The landscape design itself was created by Strybos Barron King Landscape Architecture (SBK), with hardscaping done by Bowmanite, planting and softscaping by Tekk Construction and pool installation done by Gib-San Pools.
“We selected materials like architectural concrete for the driveway and part of the pool deck, which has a sandblast finish that looks similar to the smooth limestone used on the home,” says Matthew Regimbal, associate and senior landscape technologist and designer at SBK.
The same limestone was used for the retaining walls in the back where terrace gardens were created to adjust the grade and also create a beautiful view from the lake towards the home and from the property to the lake.
To achieve the client’s goal to draw the setting of the lake and mature trees around them, natural stone was used in an ice blue flagstone nicely blends the pool with the colours of the lake.
Larger plantings and trees were added to give the property an established look, including white spruce, Norway spruce, ornamental grasses, forest grasses and clipped boxwoods and yews were added to match the liner look of the house.
The home has ample curb appeal yet remains somewhat private. “They wanted to create a courtyard feel in the driveway with a little bit of privacy, which was achieved by using the raised planter,” says Regimbal.
“By the pool area they wanted a cabana and a casual seating area they could use for three seasons, complete with a fireplace. “The pool deck was made for sunning and lounging with some lower areas to frame the view of the lake.” At the basement level, there’s a walk-out with a private garden area which was created for their son who lives there.
The outdoor ambiance gets turned up a notch at night. “Lighting was installed to highlight the architectural features of the retaining walls, the planters and some of the trees,” Regimbal notes. “The driveway is also lined with lighting. We selected lighting that was hidden under the coping of the walls that would shine down at night but be hidden during the day.”
